The hard-working staff at Sport Pembrokeshire are well known for the massive contribution they make to the whole gamut of sporting and leisure activities in the county, especially with regard to new initiatives aimed at encouraging young children to take up an activity, or doing such good work in promoting disability sport that they recently became only the third authority to be granted the 'insport' silver medal for that particular area.
But Sport Pembrokeshire manager Ben Field and his trusty crew took on a fresh challenge last week when, for the second year in succession, they went mob-handed to a club to help with general ground work, painting and decorating at Clarbeston Road AFC.
Characters galore in attendance
Last season it was Fishguard Sports who benefitted as the Sport Pembrokeshire crew donned their overalls to paint at the Sports' new Tregroes headquarters and it was nice that the Sports' chairman Matthew 'Minty' Lamb joined Ben & Co at Clarbie.
"They were brilliant with us last season," 'Minty' told us,” and I just wanted to say thank you in a small way."
The sport Pembrokeshire team were joined by Clarbeston Road stalwarts June Harries (Hon Secretary), Huw Bevan (Junior football organiser), Steve Brown (Chairman) and Del Lewis (President), with June having as much paint on her hands as on the changing rooms after Huw had 'accidentally' lost control of his roller!
Mutual appreciation
She was unstinting in her praise, however, and told us,
“We were delighted to be involved in such a great venture and even more thrilled with the outcome. It was a generous gesture which we really appreciated!”
"We were delighted to be involved with such a busy club,” said Ben Field, “who not only have senior teams but have a host of junior players and play host to the 'Warriors' disability team.
"Some of my team cut grass, used strimmers to tidy up the banks and hedgerows, and raked up lots of dead grass to leave the pitches in pristine condition.
"We also painted the clubhouse and changing rooms, inside and out; no mean feat in the very hot weather - and we were kept going by loud music chosen by Wyndham Williams.
"This is our way of making a contribution to a club who put lots into their sport and next season we aim to do the same again. I am delighted with the total support provided by the members of my team and I would like to thank them all for their enthusiasm and hard work."
